(Should be) Top of the Board

Jordan Spieth

Suggested price: $6.76
Breakeven Rank: 23.5

The man’s links golf record is incredible. He has the lowest scoring average at The Open since 2015 and is super creative around the greens, which is required around St. Andrews. Previously his driver has been a question, and with all the pot bunkers around St. Andrews, fairway driving is certainly important. However, Spieth has only lost strokes off the tee in ONE of his last ten events. You are going to need to go LOW this week if the weather stays calm and Spieth is 4th on tour in rounds of 66 or lower since 2014. History is on his side, as Spieth has been crushing The Open, here are his past 6 finishes: 4th, T30, 1, T9, T20, 2. He’s also never missed a cut at the Open in his career. Look to see these trends continue at St. Andrews.

Mid Tier

Max Homa

Suggested Price: $6.84
Breakeven Rank: 23

If you’re looking for a top golfer in the world, look no further than Max Homa. Not only is he grouped with Tiger and reigning U.S. Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick, but his strokes gained numbers are out of this world. In terms of SG: Ball Striking (Off the Tee + Approach), he is sixth in the field over the last 24 rounds of anyone with at least 4 rounds per @Rickrungood. In terms of SG: Total? Well, that would be a mere 4th place in the field. His off the tee play is elite, gaining in 11 straight events and that will give him a huge advantage on the relatively short St. Andrews. With all the runout taking place in the baked out fairways, Homa should be on or near plenty of Par 4’s in one or Par 5’s in two. The best news is that his short game has been on the rise. Per datagolf, Homa has gained around the greens in his last 4 and gained putting in 5/6. What’s not to love?

Sam Burns

Suggested Price: $6.59
Breakeven Rank: 24.5

Burns has been in ripping form and absolutely bombs the ball, so St. Andrews should suit him well. He is also a great putter and with the large greens at the Open, being able to lag putt successfully on the Par 5s is a major advantage. His form has dipped recently, with a missed cut and DFL in his last two starts, but that should just mean you’ll be able to grab him at a discount. Before then? Two wins and two other top 5 finishes. Burns chipping let him down in those two missed cuts and I see that as an anomaly, as historically, he has a solid short game.

Longshots

Ryan Fox

Suggested Price: $5.28

Breakeven Rank: 32.6

A lot of people have not heard of the kiwi, but he is in form the likes of which we have never seen. Realistically, he should have at least 3 european tour wins but succumbed to some bad breaks (and a little bit of choking) but here are his finishes this season: 1, T15, T9, T8, T2, 54 (at the PGA Championship), 2, MC (at the US Open), 3, 2, 47. Not too shabby as the big hitter from down under has gone from 119th to 48th in the world during this stretch. After a bad finish at the Scottish open, sentiment on Fox might be down from the highs of the last few weeks. He’s worth a flier at the right price.

Gary Woodland

Suggested Price: $4.51
Breakeven Rank: 37.9

A major champion, Woodland has struggled to find form over the last two season because of a nagging hip injury. Finally healthy this season, Gary has shown flashes throughout but hasn’t gotten back in the winners circle. Luckily, in Jock MKT, you don’t need to win tournaments to be profitable! Woodland quietly finished top 10 at the US open and was looking poised for a run at the Scottish open before a bad Saturday pushed him into a still solid T30. With this form, and Woodland’s pedigree, a top 40 finish to break even seems like a great deal.
