What a freakin’ weekend at TPC Harding. We were all dreaming of a magical six-golfer playoff as the players made their way down the back nine on Sunday, but Collin Morikawa stole the show with his eagle on 16 and eventually took home the hardware. What a show from the Cali Kid who has officially cemented himself as a force on the Tour.
This week, we head to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. As the last tournament before the FedEx Playoffs, some players will be out there with a sense of urgency looking to find their way into the 125-player field.
Sedgewood is a Donald Ross course, comparable to Detroit CC (home of the Rocket Mortgage Classic) known for its fast Bermuda greens and manageable distance. The course features only two Par 5s, and neither are particularly daunting at 529 and 545 yards. Additionally, eight of its twelve Par 4s fall between 400 and 450 yards. If you could have guessed it, approach and putting drastically outweigh ball-striking here and scoring consistently is a must. The last four winners have all shot a 259 or lower!
Here are the Fair Value ranks among the field and who looks like they could outperform their IPO pricing:
Webb Simpson – The favorite sits atop our FV ranks this week with good reason. Simpson has the 2nd most SG among the field during his career at Sedgefield and has the strongest short game of the bunch. Look for him to sit atop the leaderboard all weekend.
Brooks Koepka – Needing points to reach the playoffs, Koepka should play hungry this week. He will be able to make mince-meat of these short par 4s and score often.
Harris English – Steady Eddy, English has notched top-20 finishes in each of his last four tournaments. He has the best form of anyone in the field and should be held high by his consistent work on the greens.
Ryan Moore – Quietly picking up steam, Moore looks to return to glory at a course where he has three Top 10s and a victory to his name. Our top middle man looks like a steal opening at $6.07.
Chez Reavie – Reavie was really on a roll before a disaster last weekend at the PGA Championship. Take out his 75th place finish, and Reavie is 3rd among this field in aggregate SG over the previous six events. That feels like a huge buy opportunity at $5.38.
Brandt Snedeker – A two-time winner at Wyndham (somehow over 10 years apart) and consistent performer on Donald Ross courses (three additional T10s), Snedeker offers great value.
Dark Horse
JT Poston – It is not often you’ll find a ‘dark horse’ who is a defending champion and owner of the course’s 72 hole record, but JT fits the bill. $4.69 sign me up!
